Why I Founded Hispanic Entertainment Alliance
I founded the Hispanic Entertainment Alliance in 2019, inspired by the words my mother said when I left New Mexico for Nashville back in 1995:
"Nunca olvides tu cultura."
"Never forget your culture."
When I first arrived in Nashville, I didn’t know a single person from the Southwest or anyone who truly understood what it meant to be Hispanic. I was constantly asked questions like, “How long did it take to get your Green Card?” or “Wow, your English is really great!”
There were even people who didn’t know New Mexico was part of the United States.
I never told my mother about those moments. Instead, I took every patronizing remark, every misguided comment, and used them as fuel. I worked harder. I let those experiences challenge me rather than discourage me.
In 2019, I decided it was time to create something that didn’t yet exist in the Nashville; a community which united Hispanic and Latine creatives in the music and entertainment industry. How do I know it didn’t exist? Because I searched everywhere and while there were a few artists here and there who came and went, there wasn’t an actual community. Also, it broke my heart to learn I was the first Latina to earn a VP role with a major label in Nashville (2000), and the first Latina to launch a PR, branding, and management firm Marushka Media (2016). It was 2019 after all; how was I the first? I had to do something to change this.
In the seven years since my idea was set in motion, I’ve had the privilege of hosting the first-ever Latina Writers' Round in Nashville, organizing the first Latina showcase at the Country Music Hall of Fame, and becoming the first Latina board member on the Americana Music Association, Gospel Music Association, and Recording Academy Board of Governors (Nashville Chapter).
I get to open doors, and hold them open, for Hispanic and Latine creatives, ascending executives, and allies who are ready to step into their spotlights, in Nashville and beyond.
My dear friend and colleague, Steve Rohr, once shared about the film business: "Hollywood is like a snow globe; it’s beautiful to look at, but have you ever noticed, there’s no door?" Steve is a hero to me. He walks the walk and has been bringing people into a formerly closed-door community in Hollywood for years.
Inspired by Steve’s example — and driven by Mama’s hope that I’d share my culture with the world — opening doors for others is no longer a dream but a reality.
Please join our growing community as we connect, create and celebrate.
You belong.
Thank you, Mama. And don’t worry, I’ll never forget.
